Political Texting: The Registration Timeline Nobody Explains

Campaigns budget for texting and forget to budget for permission. Then they discover in the last month that they cannot legally send anything, and the most cost-effective voter contact channel is gone. Here is what the process actually involves, and where the weeks disappear.

There are three separate approvals, not one

Most people say "we need to get 10DLC set up" as if it were a single form. It is three distinct things, controlled by three different parties, and they have to happen in order:

Step 2 is the one that surprises people. The committee's own officers must complete Campaign Verify with the committee's real filing information. No vendor can shortcut it, and a campaign that starts it the week before GOTV has already lost the channel.

Where the weeks actually go

In our experience the delay is almost never the carriers' review time. It is these four things:

What the opt-in rules require

Separate from registration, the consent rules govern who you may text at all. The short version:

This is not legal advice, and the rules shift. Have counsel review your consent language before you scale a program.

How to compress the timeline

Two things move the date up more than anything else:

Where Renegade is different

Renegade Intel is already a registered 10DLC sender — the platform-level registration that costs other campaigns weeks is finished before you arrive. Your committee still completes Campaign Verify itself, because the rules require that, and the app walks you through it step by step. In practice we typically get committees verified and sending in days rather than weeks.

Once you are approved: SMS, photo MMS, GIFs, and video texts, sent to audiences cut from the same voter records your field and fundraising programs use — with consent, opt-out, and suppression handled in the same system.
